Reception Music

The ceremony is over and it is time to celebrate! Here are some ways to save on that DJ who will keep guests moving and entertained throughout the day’s festivities.

1.       Play all of your favorites by skipping the DJ and hooking up your iPod to speakers or the house sound system during your reception. This is a very frugal alternative to a DJ or band and you’ll have complete control over the playlist! Have a friend or relative supervise the music and act as the emcee for specific events, like the introductions, first dances and cake cutting. Just make sure the house sound system at your venue is loud enough, or bring in/borrow/rent speakers or a sound system that will work. Either way, you’ll save money.

2.       Forget the bells and whistles, and just book a basic DJ package. Really, all you need is a DJ that will act as the announcer, play music, and bring in a sound system. You probably don’t really need the smoke machines, bubbles, and light show. Selecting the most basic package for the exact amount of time you need (i.e. skip cocktail hour and just have the DJ for the reception) can save you hundreds of dollars.

3.       Hit up the wedding shows. Besides being a fun time to celebrate being a bride and scoring lots of freebies, local DJs and bands will often advertise their services at wedding shows, and in many cases, give attendees coupons or a special discounted rate.

4.       As always, shop around! Don’t forget that prices for DJs and live bands can vary dramatically. Make sure to check the prices for multiple DJs, look closely at what is included in packages, and don’t be afraid to negotiate. Also, keep your eyes and ears open for people trying to break into the DJ business or new local bands- their prices will often be cheaper than more established businesses.
